Knock knees: Symptoms, causes and treatment

Humans always wish to look perfect for lifelong. They don’t want any damage to their body. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. That’s why its said life is a mystery, it will take twist the second where you think it’s in your control. If you accept it and try to find to correct the things, then only you can go further in life. The same goes with deformities and some people suffer a lot with it. Another name – also called  genu valgum or bow legs.

Can be seen in- child or adults.

Knock knees can be seen when a child or an adult stands up straight with their knee together, what happens is, their feet and ankle stay apart which make it a bit different from the average human. Moreover in this deformity the knees caps points inward, due to angular deformity at the knee. For easy imagination, if a child is standing whose knees touch, but ankle do not, that means he or she is suffering from this knock knee.

How can it be checked?

Knock knees can be checked by directly measuring the angle of the shin bone to the thigh bone that is the tibiofemoral angle. Another thing we can do is measure the distance or gap between the ankles (called intermalleolar space).

As technology is now one of the best and can say accurate method is X-Ray to get clarity over the doubt.

Symptoms 

Modification age-wise?

During childhood, as knock knee grows with body’s growth and development. 

  • Between birth and 18 months- the outer turning alignment from hip to knee to ankle is normal.
  • Between 18 to 24 months- the body becomes neutral, no modification and changes observed.
  • Child between 2 to 5 years- an inward turning alignment is normal.

One more pattern is observed.

  • Caucasian child – Knock knee in child seen as bow leg after birth.
  • Two years child- straightening out is observed.
  • Four years child- going into knock knee.
  • 6 to 11 years- straightening out is celebrated in this age bar.

Is it varying from gender to gender?

Some gender variation are seen to the timing and severity of the deformities. Just as an example, it was seen that southern Indian children tend to recover sooner after birth and suffer the deformities at an earlier but less severe angle. Besides, gender-wise girls seem to have a high percentage of chances of the knock knee than boys in all the ages.

Pathological knock knee

Pathological knock knee can be observed as an early sign of the underlying disorder. Knock knee might occur due to some neurological conditions, like cerebral palsy or spina bifida. And this results in alteration of muscle pull on the bones. This might occur due to deficiency of minerals, as because of the same cause rickets has been observed in people. It can be seen in combination with 

  • Short stature
  • Joint misalignment
  • Skeletal dysplasia
  • Metabolic bone disorder

Obesity also effects severe knock knees during adolescence. Moreover, this can be observed in children with flat feet and children with hypermobile (over flexible) joints.

Treatment

It’s been observed that knock knee can be cured through surgery and conservative treatment. The deformity will disturb any of the parents as their child is suffering from enormous pain and suffering. and they will surlily search for any possible treatment. That’s why knowing about treatment is much important. So, let’s discuss the treatment which can help for the cure of knock knees. Besides, ignoring knock knees will affect your health and fitness.

Starting from the

Conservative treatment

If you would have observed in childhood, our grandma, squeeze the childlike like anything, while doing massaging. Of course, you can connect well if you are from India as that grandma exercise are exclusive from India. That massaging is done to make the infant’s muscles and bones strong. Exercise will help a lot to recover the knock knee and as obesity is going to be one of the dangerous things as it increases the chances of the knock knee. Weight loss should be taken seriously, and exercise should be done in every possible way. You can do Yoga or follow certain diet to reduce your weight.

Knee braces and foot orthoses can be used to deal with painful osteoarthritis associate with knock knee, which was seen maximumly in adults. But the above method might work or not can’t be guaranteed to cure knock knees, as for initial stages of knock knees it might works well.so If the doctor suggests you this, it’s good then you can go for it. Otherwise, it’s nothing wrong to do exercise; it will surely be going to help in one or the other way.

Surgery

Another way to tackle with severe knock knees is surgery. For children suffering with pathological knock knees need to go for orthopaedic surgery to correct the alignment.  This option should be taken carefully as many operations required to undergo to cure pathological knock knees.

  • A hemi epiphysiodesis is a type of “guided growth” operation- which involves the placement of staples or a plate on the inner part of the knee to slow down growth. Meanwhile, the outside part of the knee continues to grow. The procedure is having chances of correcting the knee angle to a straight position.
  • Another surgery procedure is – wedge osteotomy. In this the top of the shin bone or bottom of the thigh bone is cut and a small portion removed to correct the knee alignment. This method works too well for correction of the of the bone.
